Aug. 26, 2019&mdash;Drinking three or more caffeinated beverages a day can increase the risk of migraine, according to a small new study in the <a target="_blank" href=" https://www.amjmed.com/article/S0002-9343(19)30210-4/fulltext">American Journal of Medicine</a>. 
The study involved 98 people who had frequent episodic migraines&mdash;meaning their migraines aren't frequent enough to be considered "chronic." The participants kept daily diaries for at least six weeks where they tracked beverages, headaches, medications and other lifestyle information.
The study found that one or two caffeinated drinks didn't increase the risk of migraine. But drinking three or more caffeinated beverages was linked with higher odds of migraine both that day and the day after.
For people who didn't regularly drink caffeine, the findings were a bit different. Even one serving of caffeine increased the odds of a migraine that day. 
The study defined servings of caffeine as: 
<ul>
 <li>A cup of coffee.</li>
 <li>6 ounces of tea. </li>
 <li>A 12-ounce can of soda. </li>
 <li>A 2-ounce can of energy drink. </li>
</ul>
Since the amount of caffeine in these servings varies from 25 to 150 milligrams, researchers couldn't pinpoint the exact amount that can increase migraine risk. However, the study's results were consistent even after accounting for factors like stress, sleep and menstruation. 
Researchers said there haven't been many studies about how caffeinated beverages affect the immediate risk for migraine. They noted that more studies are needed to confirm their findings and to explore how caffeine relates to other migraine triggers.
