Talk about the power of connection: thanks to gifted mentors and leading-edge technology, the future is looking much brighter for the children of Phoenix Day’s After-School Program.

The program’s participants come from neighborhoods where gang activity, drug abuse and poverty are prevalent. Phoenix Day offers homework assistance, recreation and sports, plus nutritious snacks and hot dinners, to at-risk kids in South Phoenix. But until recently, the children, who rely on the center’s computers to complete school assignments, were at a distinct technological disadvantage.

The nonprofit organization has been challenged of late to provide adequate support because it lacks updated technology and resources. Dozens of children have just two desktop computers to share—both very old and unreliable. Additionally, the center no longer has Internet service due to connectivity problems. And, that’s where Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona (BCBSAZ) stepped in.
