Big life moments &mdash; a wedding, a new baby, a job change &mdash; can shift more than your schedule. They can also open a window to update your health insurance, even outside of open enrollment.
Why it matters: Missing a special enrollment window could mean waiting months to make changes to your coverage.

 <li>Certain life changes may qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP), allowing you to update your health coverage outside of open enrollment.</li>
 <li>Most SEPs last 30 to 60 days, so acting quickly is important once a qualifying life event occurs.</li>
 <li>Documentation is typically required, such as a marriage certificate, adoption paperwork or proof of loss of coverage. </li>

What counts as a qualifying life event?
A qualifying life event (QLE) is a major change in your life circumstances that makes you eligible for a special enrollment period (SEP) &mdash; a limited window to enroll in, change or cancel health coverage outside of open enrollment.
Common qualifying life events include:
<ul style="list-style-type: disc;">
 <li>Marriage or domestic partnership, one of the most common triggers, especially with wedding season in full swing</li>
 <li>Birth, adoption or placement of a child</li>
 <li>Loss of other health coverage, such as losing a job-based plan or aging off a parent's plan</li>
 <li>Divorce or legal separation that results in loss of coverage</li>
 <li>Moving to a new coverage area</li>
 <li>Changes in household size or income that affect eligibility for Marketplace plans or Medicaid</li>
</ul>
Not every life change qualifies. Voluntary cancellations or changes to employment that don't affect your coverage typically do not trigger a SEP.
How special enrollment periods work
When a qualifying life event occurs, most people have a 30- to 60-day window to make changes to their <a></a><a></a><a href="https://www.azblue.com/">health coverage</a>. The window typically begins on the date of the event. For example, the date of your wedding or the date your previous coverage ends.
Acting promptly matters. If you miss the SEP window, you may need to wait until the next open enrollment period to make changes.
What you can do during a <a href="https://www.azblue.com/members/renew-your-plan">special enrollment period</a>:

 <li>Enroll in a new health plan</li>
 <li>Add or remove dependents from your current plan</li>
 <li>Switch to a different plan that better fits your new needs</li>
