BCBSAZ Coverage Updates

Our members need us more than ever. Our commitment to supporting their health in the time of COVID-19 is at the heart of several critical coverage updates that help ensure easier and more affordable access to care.

These updates have been implemented for all fully insured members. Our self-funded customers have the option of making these updates available to their employees.

Testing and Treatment

COVID-19 Testing No cost share COVID-19 testing is a covered benefit with all of our medical plans. What’s new is that members won’t have a copay or co-insurance for COVID-19 diagnostic testing. Testing must be ordered by a provider—and performed according to CDC guidelines.

COVID-19 Testing & Treatment No prior authorization required BCBSAZ is waiving prior authorization (precertification) for diagnostic tests and covered treatment services that are medically necessary and consistent with CDC guidance for members who have been diagnosed with COVID-19.

Treatment No cost share for in-network services through May 2020 BCBSAZ is waiving all copays, co-insurance, and other cost-sharing related to COVID-19 treatment from in-network providers through May 2020.
This means that members will pay $0 out-of-pocket should they or a family member covered under their BCBSAZ plan need treatment for COVID-19.

Telemedicine

BCBSAZ is making it easy for members to connect with a doctor from home and reduce exposure to COVID-19.

Most of our in-network providers are now offering telemedicine visits. When we say “telemedicine,” we are talking about telemedicine, telehealth, and tele-dentistry.

To help our members “stay home, stay healthy, and stay connected,” we’re waiving the cost share for telemedicine visits with an in-network provider. Members pay $0 out of pocket for in-network telemedicine through June 12, 2020 when services are covered by their plan, medically necessary, and reasonable to be provided virtually.

  • Visits with a BCBSAZ in-network provider

We are encouraging our members to first check with their PCP or other in-network BCBSAZ provider about scheduling a telemedicine visit. Many doctors who didn’t offer this option before are doing so now.

Telemedicine visits between a member and their regular doctor reinforce the established relationship and supports enhanced care coordination. That’s why the best first step for members is to try a telemedicine visit with their regular in-network provider.

  • BlueCare Anywhere for urgent care

When a member doesn’t have a regular doctor, or if their PCP isn’t available or doesn’t offer telemedicine visits, BlueCare Anywhere℠ is available. Members can talk with a board-certified doctor by live video for urgent medical care, psychiatry, and counseling sessions.

BlueCare Anywhere is a covered benefit for Individual and Family plan members, most Group plan members, and Medicare Advantage members in BluePathway and BlueJourney plans. Some of our self-funded customers offer other options.

In addition, we’re making this service available through June 12, 2020, to Blue Medicare Classic, Standard, and Plus plan members, and for all of our Medicare Supplement plan members.
