Understanding Anxiety
It’s normal to feel worried or anxious now and then, especially when life throws you curveballs like health, money, school, or family problems.
But when the anxious feelings stick around and sneak into everyday moments for six months or more, it’s worth taking a closer look at what’s going on.
What is anxiety?
Anxiety disorders are mental health conditions. People experience anxiety differently, but it can show up as feeling on edge, constant nerves, trouble sleeping, shaking, and a racing heart.
Types of anxiety disorders include:
- Generalized anxiety disorder: When worry gets out of control. You may be in a constant state of worry, fear, or dread over everyday issues.
- Panic disorder: When unexpected panic attacks happen often. Panic attacks feel like a sudden wave of fear with shortness of breath, shaking, tingling, and a rapid heart rate.
- Social anxiety disorder: An overwhelming fear of being watched and judged by others. This can make you avoid everyday social situations.
- Specific phobias: Intense, irrational fear of a specific thing that is generally not harmful, like heights or animals.
You are not alone
Anxiety is one of the most common mental health conditions in the U.S., and more than 35% of Arizona adults have reported symptoms of anxiety or depression.
The good news is that there are steps you can take to feel better. There are small things you can do right now - like taking a walk, calling a friend, and giving yourself a break from screens.
Get professional help if you think you have anxiety. Treatments like therapy and medication can make a big difference.
