Maybe you just got a serious diagnosis and want a second set of eyes to confirm it. Or you want to weigh your treatment options with someone who could have a different perspective or knowledge set.

No matter the reason, getting a second opinion is more common than you think.

It doesn’t mean you don’t trust your doctor. In fact, many doctors will encourage you to get a second opinion and can refer you to another medical professional. Think of it as doing all your research and homework before making a big decision.

It is up to you to take charge of your health. If you are dealing with a health scare and want to get a second opinion, you should feel empowered to get it.

What is a second opinion?

In medical terms, a second opinion is when you seek an evaluation or guidance from another healthcare professional regarding a diagnosis, treatment plan, or surgical procedure. When faced with a significant medical decision, such as a serious diagnosis or the need for a major operation, you can consult with another doctor or specialist to get another perspective on your condition and recommended course of action.

Will insurance cover a second opinion?

Contact your health plan to check if it will be covered.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona (AZ Blue) members tend to seek a second opinion for serious or life-altering conditions or treatment plans. Every case and health plan differs, but AZ Blue offers coverage for second opinions for covered benefits and services. When a service is “covered,” that means your health plan will pay a portion or all the costs associated with that service. Services that are not covered include things like cosmetic surgery. Members should always try to seek a second opinion in-network, but even if they seek a second opinion out-of-network, insurance may pay for some or all the costs. A team of clinicians will review the circumstances and determine whether your insurance will cover associated costs based on whether the second opinion is for something that is medically necessary. Call the number on the back of your insurance card to check what your policy will cover.

How do I tell my doctor I want a second opinion?

Don’t be shy! Your doctor will understand that you want the best possible care. They want that for you too.

  1. Tell your doctor that you want to be fully informed about your diagnosis, prognosis, and available treatment options and would like a second opinion. You can say something as simple as “I’d like to see another doctor to cover my bases.”
  2. Ask your doctor to recommend someone else.
  3. If you have a specific doctor in mind, ask for a referral to them.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona members can use the ‘Find a Doctor’ tool on www.azblue.com to find a specialist. Once you log on, you can search using multiple filters.

While your doctor is highly skilled and knowledgeable, a second opinion can offer confirmation, alternative treatment options, or even uncover previously overlooked factors. Taking the proactive step of seeking a second opinion can give you confidence and peace of mind that you’re getting the best possible care – the care that you deserve.
