Caught in the Middle: How the Sandwich Generation Can Navigate AEP

Many adults in their 40s, 50s, and even 60s are finding themselves caring for both their children and their aging parents, referred to as the ‘Sandwich Generation’ of caregivers. Imagine juggling work, family dinners, and school activities when your parent calls needing help with a doctor’s visit or a prescription they don’t understand. It’s a mix of love, duty, and stress that can wear anyone thin. That’s what the Sandwich Generation is finding themselves doing.

Right in the middle of it all comes Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)—a key time each fall to make sure your parents’ coverage truly fits their needs.

What's AEP?

It’s a time in the year when people who qualify for Medicare can review and change their health coverage for the upcoming year.

Here’s how caregivers can make the most of AEP:

  • Review current coverage: look for changes in premiums, deductibles, or benefits.
  • Check provider networks: AZ Blue connects members to 18,000+ providers statewide in our Medicare Advantage plan network, plus additional options through our Medicare Supplement plan network.*
  • Lean on trusted resources: Use tools and support from AZ Blue to simplify the process.
  • Use a broker: Get personalized guidance comparing Medicare plans at no extra cost.

When is AEP?

From October 15 through December 7th every year.

What to Consider in a Medicare Plan?

  • Coverage Needs: Consider current or future health needs, prescriptions, and preferred doctors and specialists.
  • Costs Beyond Premiums: Compare deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximums to understand the full financial picture.
  • Provider Network and Benefits: Check if their care team is in-network and explore extra benefits like wellness programs.
