Blueprint for Happiness: It's Time to Reduce Your Screen Time

We are all guilty of spending too much time scrolling.

In fact, a study revealed that back in 2019, Arizonans spent more time on their phones than any other state’s residents. The latest data reveals we’ve collectively gotten better as a state, but Arizonans are still spending an average of 4 hours a day on their phones. And that doesn’t even account for the computers, tablets, and TV’s we stare at for hours.

Besides the physical downsides of excessive screen time (tech neck is a real thing), it can harm our mental health.

The tech effect on your brain

  • Lack of focus: The constant stream of alerts, pings, emails, texts, calls, and notifications can overwhelm our brains, decrease attention span, and lead to mental fatigue.
  • Stress, anxiety, and depression: Studies have linked screen time to all three. Social media in particular is a growing concern as it can cause self-esteem issues and evoke feelings of envy and self-doubt.
  • Sleep problems: Screen time before bedtime interferes with your circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm is a natural process that is part of the body’s internal clock. The blue light from digital devices can trick the brain into thinking it is still daytime and you might lose some precious sleep because of it.

Disconnect to be happier and healthier

You don’t need to ditch your phone to disconnect - just don’t be glued to it. You can wait in line and sit with your thoughts instead of scrolling. You can occasionally trade in your favorite TV show for your favorite book. You can make sure your phone doesn’t sit with you at the dinner table. You can turn airplane mode on, even when you’re not on an airplane.

Less screen time has been linked to reduced stress levels, improved mood, and a boost in creativity. In other words, less screen time means more happiness. A recent study found that eliminating even one hour of screen time daily can make a huge difference!

This Mental Health Awareness Month, and every month, try to focus on activities that promote mental and physical well-being like exercise, meditation, and spending time in nature instead of spending time in front of screens.
