How to Protect Your Health in Arizona’s Extreme Heat

June 4, 2026

What AZ Blue Medicare members need to know about heat-related illness this summer.

Arizona's summer heat is no joke. With record-breaking temperatures becoming the norm, staying safe means staying informed - for you and everyone you love.

Three things to know:

  • Approximately 4,298 people visit Arizona emergency rooms every year because of heat-related illness, and that number has been climbing.
  • Older adults, and anyone managing diabetes, heart disease, or other chronic conditions, face higher risks in extreme heat and should take extra precautions.
  • AZ Blue members are covered for emergency care as in-network, even if the nearest hospital is not in your plan's network.

Heat-related illness is more common than you think

Record-breaking heat is our new reality, and it is more important than ever to protect yourself. This year was the earliest 100-degree weather ever.  Knowing the signs and taking simple precautions can make all the difference.

If you are an older adult, take extra precautions.

Heat affects older adults differently. As we age, it becomes harder for our bodies to regulate temperature, and certain medications and health conditions like diabetes or heart disease make it especially important to stay cool and hydrated.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Stay hydrated, even if you do not feel thirsty. Dehydration can sneak up quickly and worsen conditions like diabetes.
  • Keep an eye on blood sugar. High temperatures can affect how your body uses insulin, so test regularly and adjust as needed.
  • Check your medications. Some prescriptions affect how your body handles heat. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

Heat can also affect your medications directly, making them less effective or changing how they work. Store your medications as directed and never leave them in a hot car or mailbox. Don’t forget to check with your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions.
