A Timely Gift Helps Victims Stand Strong
Imagine how reassuring it can be to have a safe place to go when things in your life are frightening and uncertain. Since 1995, Mt. Graham Safe House (MGSH) has been a safe haven in a time of need.
The nonprofit organization in Safford, Ariz., provides shelter and support for victims of domestic violence or sexual assault. In addition to round-the-clock crisis intervention and emergency room visits, MGSH provides a wide range of advocacy services.
MGSH staff and volunteers escort clients through the social services, medical and legal systems. For women and their children impacted by abusive relationships involving domestic violence, the organization offers secure emergency shelter as well as transitional housing apartments. Programs that include job training, self-help groups, and classes in parenting and money management help residents foster healthier perspectives along with valuable life skills.
Equally important, MGSH advocates for change. "We are dedicated to the prevention of domestic violence in the communities that we serve," says Jeanette Aston, Mt. Graham Safe House executive director. "We work diligently in promoting awareness and education in schools and communities."
Since 2008, MGSH has been understaffed, and unable to help as many families as previous years, due to a lack of necessary funding. Thankfully, a donation from Blue Cross
Blue Shield of Arizona (BCBSAZ) will help to ensure it can continue to provide these crucial community services—aiding a quicker recovery while also offering a safe haven to even more people in need.
